Passover from a Jewish perspective according OT & NT Scriptures

I was wondering why everybody went along with "Jesus was crucified on Friday" as the Bible clearly is against that. On asking some of our Pastors and even visiting Pastors who were rated quite highly in knowledge of the Bible I found that they didn't know on what day of the week Jesus died, didn't want to give an opinion, didn't care that it clearly showed an error in the Bible that would put people off, as most would not check in the Bible as "it is too difficult to follow" or "will look into it some other time", and "we often hear that the Bible is full of errors" so we listen to the devil as he is more interesting. With so many claiming the Bible is full of errors, (evolutionists and Humanists do this all the time, because their peace of mind depends on keeping their mind convinced that there is no God, in spite of the mounting evidence that evolution cannot be true, chemicals cannot form into life), Pastors, Vicars Priests etc should be publically attacking any idea that is put up as if it is an error in the Bible, perhaps many sermons should cover an example so that the congregation becomes aware that if you search around for a bit the answer can be found to all accusations, and to encourage them to "search the scriptures". This page is an example of how just a little bit of scripture can clarify questions that should have been sorted out in Bible College, so that it should have been preached and all the congregations would know for certain.

I wrote several pages on Passover before I realised that the present day celebrations are out of time with the OT original event, so this page is mainly about that aspect, but covers all of Passover, the earlier page is;-
" http://creationtheory.mysite.com/passover.html " and is still correct to the present celebrations.

Working out the Passover according to the Laws and the rules for the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Passover is often spoken of as part of the Feast of Unleaven Bread, sometimes confusing the timing of the events as to which day is being spoken of. This is because the Bible is written according to Roman days, midnight to midnight, six to eight hours behind the Jewish days. Therefore I have pointed out in many places that the Jewish days start at sunset, until the next sunset.

The Feast of Unleaven Bread, preparation Day and Passover are somewhat loosely spoken of as part of an eight day feast, any name referring to any part, often out of order, unless specific. Genesis Ch:1 v5 And the evening and the morning were the first day. You will need to remember that the day starts at sunset, that is why the Jewish Sabbath starts at sunset of Friday, which is the start of Saturday evening. This is difficult to keep in mind if you are brought up on midnight to midnight days, which do not apply anywhere in this article, however since the New Testament is written in Roman times and midnight to midnight days, this must be mentioned frequently to correct the timing of events into Jewish sunset to sunset days.

The original event is in Exodus Ch.12.
Take note of the timing, select the lambs on the 10th, then kill the lambs on the 14th, the Angel of Death passes over, they are ordered out of Egypt and when they stop for the evening meal no leaven is allowed for seven days.

The Main points to keep in mind, and apply to Jesus

(Exodus Ch12: AKJV
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. (the religious year)
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
(This is the evening of the 14th just after sunset of the 13th, not the late afternoon of the 14th, just before sunset brings in the 15th as done at present?)
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, (the 14th, not the 15th as at present) roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
46: Do not break any bones:
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
29: At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt;
31: During the night (of the 14th.) Pharaoh summoned Moses and said GO.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
15: For seven days eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove yeast from your houses, (leven is usually removed on preparation Day, 14th, in Roman day time, the day the lambs are killed in the late afternoon, as in the present practise )
16: on the first and seventh day (of the seven day Feast) hold a sacred assembly: (Sabbaths).
Exodus: 23;
14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.
15 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
Abib, now called Nisan is the start of the Religious Year.

The Events in the life of Jesus
Mat. 12:v39-40.
39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus arrived at Bethany on Friday, the 8th of Nisan (Abib) six days before the Passover, the 14th,
Jn 12:v1

v1 Then Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

Then the sun set making it the 9th which was a normal Sabbath.

v 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

There was a party in honour of Jesus and people were free to come because they could not work as it was the normal Sabbath, and he was anointed v3.
The next day, Sunday, 10th Jesus rode into Jerusalem and the crowd chose Jesus as the Lamb Of God by acclamation, Palm Sunday to Christians. This is the day Jesus was chosen by public acclimation to be our Passover Lamb, and from the text above the Lamb must be chosen on the 10th, so if this is not the 10th then we are still waiting for our Messiah.

Jn 12:12;
v12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
v13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

You must select the lamb on the tenth, (Exodus Ch12:v3 -6), Palm Sunday to Christians, so the 14th when the lamb must be killed is Thursday. On Wednesday 13th, in the late afternoon, Jesus sent disciples to prepare the room for the feast. Luke 22:7-8, Then came the day of Unleavened Bread (including Passover, an 8 day feast) on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.( tomorrow is Passover, in just a few hours at sunset of the 13th. They were living in the Roman culture of midnight to midnight days, they thought and spoke that way, so this does not fit properly with the Jewish days, but Jesus and God are working in Jewish days, as was the actual Passover event, so you need to view it in Jewish sunset to sunset days to see how it fits together. ) v8: Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."

Matthew: 26;
18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

This was in the afternoon of Wednesday the 13th, It may have been the house of an Essenes, since the man carried water usually a woman's work, thus the timing of Jesus' feast, just after sunset, in the evening of the 14th, Jewish time, would not be unusual to that household, as I heard that the Essenes celebrated a day earlier, the beginning of the 14th. Jewish observance and Jewish Calendar were outlawed by the Romans to make everyone follow the Roman ways, and to stamp out the Jewish belief. This would seem to be the 13th to the general community who accepted that the day starts at midnight, Roman time, six to eight hours later, making it seem that the Essenes celebrated a day earlier, on the 13th in Roman time).

This means that they are eating the lambs that night of the 14th, Jewish time, after sunset, and the Angel of Death passed over, figuratively now, then they had the 14th daytime to up camp and leave Egypt. Alternatively killing and eating the lambs in the late afternoon of the 14th in Roman midnight to midnight days, means you are eating them during the evening of the Sabbath of Unleaven Bread, Jewish time, the 15th, because the sun had set, and you had not up and left Egypt as the Angel had not passed over until your midnight, the time the Roman day changed to the 15th. There seems to be a conflict between what seems to have taken place in Egypt, and the present traditional practice, that I cannot solve at present, but suggest the Pharisees and Priests got used to the Roman, Greek or earlier times which counted their days from midnight to midnight which would require the lambs to be killed in the afternoon just before sunset and the night of the 14th, in Roman times. It may be that on returning from one of their captivities they mistook the instructions, possibly orchestrated by God, to get the special circumstances for Jesus to celebrate Passover at the correct time in the evening of the 14th, just after the sunset of the 13th, and still be able to fit in with the prophesies and the death of the lambs in the afternoon of the 14th. This requires a number of hours in which to arrest and convict Jesus and have him crucified, to die, and for him to be buried before sunset of the 14th according to Jewish daytime. My understanding is that the Sabbath of Unleaven Bread on the 15th was celebrated in the desert after leaving Egypt, which doesn't seem to fit with the present practices.

Change of timing, OT to NT celebrations
The original Passover in Egypt was based on the Jews understanding of the day starting at sunset, so the lambs were killed just after the designate time of sunset, since they must be killed on the 14th, the blood put on the doorposts, and eaten during the night, which would be the 14th. The angel of death passed over at midnight and then the Jews were told to leave, so they would be leaving during the daytime of the 14th. and camping in the desert on the 15th, eating unleavened bread. Any scraps must be burned up as Jesus is not to be left to scavengers, looking forward to what the celebration of Passover is fore-shadowing. If in Jesus' day they had been following the original pattern of killing the Lamb just after sunset of the 13th so it was killed on the 14th, before nightfall of the 14th, Jewish time sunset to sunset, then Jesus would have missed out on the Last Supper, which he was looking forward to.

Luke: 22;14-16:
14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

The Last Supper
Matthew: Ch.26.
v20: Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

After sunset Jesus came, so it was now the 14th the day when the lambs are to be killed, (in the afternoon about 20 hours later is the present practice), he celebrated the last supper that night of the 14th, just after sunset of the 13th. Remember Genesis Ch:1 v5 And the evening and the morning were the first day. So the night of the day is before the daytime.

Mat.26:v 26-30.
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it and brake it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

(The rest of Matthew Ch.26 and Ch.27 completes the account.)

They went out to the mount of Olives, during Thursday night, the 14th, Jesus was arrested and tried five times, illegally as it was night and he had no counsellor.

Matthew:26;

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

Judas had told the soldiers that he would identify Jesus by greeting him and kissing him, and they should arrest him. I understand it was usual to greet the Rabbi or teacher first then the others in the group.

They took Jesus first to Annas, a former High Priest, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest appointed by the Romans, (for a fee). (John18:12-14) Then he was sent on to Caiaphas.

Matthew:26;

62 And the high priest Caiaphas arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

When the high priest rent his clothes does it terminate the Levitical Priesthood, to make way for Jesus to take the position of Eternal High Priest?

Leviticus 21: 10;
10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;
Leviticus: 10.
6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

Jesus was taken before Pilate in the morning, the priests accusing him of opposing paying taxes, and claiming to be a king. So Pilate asked Jesus "Are you king of the Jews?" Jesus replied "Yes it is as you say". When Pilate heard that Jesus was a Galilean, and therefore under Herod's rule, since Herod was in Jerusalem he sent him there. Herod was greatly pleased to see Jesus and plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. They mocked Jesus and sent him back to Pilate. (Luke23: 1-12)

Matthew 27:
11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

Barabbas accepted his freedom because Jesus paid for his sins. This is pointing out that Jesus also paid for our sins, if we accept Jesus as Lord of our lives he will cover our sins, as he did for one of the thieves on the cross beside him, on the basis on a minor request, no repentance spoken of, and no way to make restitution, just "please remember me", as a minimum, as he was speaking to Jesus in person.

Matthew:27
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

Matthew 28
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Jesus was crucified 9am to 3pm, died at the time the lambs were killed, and in the tomb before sunset, of the 14th, a very busy unpleasant day. Then the sunsets so it is Friday night the 15th and the Sabbath of Unleavened Bread, until the next sunset, which is the normal Sabbath, Saturday, 16th, which is the Feast of First Fruits this year because of Passover. Jesus rose about sunrise on Sunday the 17th. This gives 3 nights, Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights in the tomb, and rise on the 3rd day, Sunday daytime, as Jesus predicted, by the sign of Jonah,

The convention of Friday crucifixion is the Roman Catholic practice of using pagan festivals for a Christian purpose, to appease the pagans when Constantine allowed, or converted to, Christianity while he kept his control as head of pagan worship as Pontifex Maximus. Remember that Jewish day starts at sunset, it is very confusing to us who are brought up on midnight to midnight days. The trials are covered in more detail on creationtheory.mysite.com/passover.

Luke:Ch24
13 ¶ And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
I like Jesus' sense of humour, "What things", after what he has been through.

Mark:Ch16:
14 ¶ Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 ¶ So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Why the Christians worshipped in the Synagogue on the Sabbath and Sunday
The Christian believers worshiped on the first day of the week, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus because if he had not risen the whole of their teaching and ministry would have been meaningless. The miracle of God resurrecting Jesus confirmed every thing they had been taught, so firmly in their hearts and minds that they eventually died for teaching it and refusing to deny that Jesus was and always will be Lord of ALL. They would go to the Synagogue to be a witness and to debate with the Jews perhaps all day and in the afternoon of Saturday Sabbath, but when the sun sets it is Sunday, the first day of the week and they were gathered in the Synagogue already, and could have their own prayer time and joyous celebrations, and witness to Jews who remained there. If the Synagogue closed to them, as they eventually did, they would go to believers homes. Remember the Jewish days start at sunset. After celebrating they would go home to bed for the night. In the morning they would go to work as usual on the 1st day of the week, and if they worked until sunset it would then be Monday, so there probably wasn't much time for prayer between the end of work and the official time of sunset of Sunday. If there was no Synagogue nearby then it would be in believers homes, or one in particular.

Disposal of bodies
The bodies of those who were crucified were the property of the Government, and were thrown into Gehenna, the rubbish fire in the Valley of Hinnom, so no relatives ever got the body, so no preparation was made for burial. However when Jesus was taken off the cross, they realised they had possession of a body to bury. They had about two to three hours when they could buy spices and cloth and get home before the Sabbath of Unleavened Bread started. Because there were two consecutive Sabbaths, Friday the Sabbath of Unleaven Bread, and Saturday the normal Sabbath, which is also the Feast of First Fruits, Mary could not go to the tomb carrying spices until Sunday.

All this was done under the Old Testament Laws, so on the day he was crucified, Jesus a Jew was not yet our Saviour, at this stage, as he is dead on the cross then in the tomb. As a dead human Jesus has no power in the Passover celebrations, nor can he forgive sins. He did however go to preach to those who died before the Flood of Noah. For the Jews the Passover would continue as normal and they would get assurance that their sins were covered for the next year. When Jesus returned to Heaven he resumed his powers, and is able to fully cover the sins of those who accept Jesus as Lord of their life. At the next Passover the Jews did not get assurance of their sins being covered, as there was another way of salvation, and according to their accurately kept records this was the year 30, so if this is correct then Jesus died in the year 29 on Thursday the 14th of Nisan, and arose on Sunday the 17th.
